Juste pour rire (Just
for Laughs) is a comedy festival held each July in Montreal,
Quebec, created in 1983. It is also a TV show springing from the
original Candid Camera created by Allen Funt with hidden camera pranks. The TV show is called Just for Laughs: Gags.
Initially it began as Candid Microphone
in 1947, created and produced by Allen Funt. It was brought to
television in 1948, its last original broadcast being aired on May
5th, 2004. His son, Peter Funt, co-hosted specials with
his father since 1987 and later became the producer and host after
the network TV version celebrated its 35th anniversary
with an NBC special in 1983.
In 1996 the CBS program celebrated the
50th anniversary of Candid Camera with Peter Funt and Suzanne Somers. In the 1960s, Woody Allen was one of the writers of the show who also performed
in some of the scenarios.
A British version of Candid Camera
began in 1960 and televised for seven years. An Australian version of
the hidden camera prank began in the 1980s.
