Initially it began as Candid Microphone in 1947, created and produced by Allen Funt. It was brought to television in 1948, its last original broadcast being aired on May 5th, 2004. His son, Peter Funt, co-hosted specials with his father since 1987 and later became the producer and host after the network TV version celebrated its 35th anniversary with an NBC special in 1983.
In 1996 the CBS program celebrated the 50th anniversary of Candid Camera with Peter Funt and Suzanne Somers. In the 1960s, Woody Allen was one of the writers of the show who also performed in some of the scenarios.
A British version of Candid Camera began in 1960 and televised for seven years. An Australian version of the hidden camera prank began in the 1980s.
