Pork Tenderloin with Corn, Tomato, and Goat Cheese Salad

Since I am on a roll for meat and salad dishes, here is another recipe from Cook's Country with a salad that includes kernel corn seared with meat in skillet. Recipe serves 4.
2 (12-ounce) pork tenderloins, trimmed
Salt and black pepper
¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
2 scallions, sliced thin (or green stalk onion)
2 tablespoons lemon juice
5 ears corn, kernel cut from cobs
8 ounces grape or Romano tomatoes, halved
2 ounces (2 cups) baby arugula, chopped (substitute with leaf lettuce, if desired)
4 ounces (1 cup) goat cheese, crumbled (substitute goat cheese with blue cheese, if desired)

Grilled Steak and Grilled Vegetable Salad

A summer grilling recipe where vegetables are grilled along with the beef to add a smoky flavor to the vegetable salad. Recipe serves 4. NOTE: I wish to dispel the idea that steaks are required to sit out until outside reaches room temperature. The Food Lab backs up this dispelled myth. However, if you have frozen meat, it should be thawed before grilling/cooking - safely. Leaving it on the counter is NOT the way to thaw meat! Best to plan ahead and leave in refrigerator until completely thawed.

Chicken Breasts with Chickpea Salad

Cook's Country photo
The chickpea is a legume seed that contains high amounts of protein. It is probably the oldest cultivated legume(fruit/seed) that dates at least as far back as 7,500 years that was an important food grown by the ancient Egyptians along the Nile River and popular in ancient Rome.
While the ancient Egyptians had a different name for the chickpea, its name is traced to Latin cognomen. Later the French called it cicer, derived also from the Latin. In the 18th century, the English named it Chick-pea, word taken from the French and found in English print in 1388. In the 17th century it was also called calavance, taken from the old Spanish word garbanzo

More Murmuring of Impeachment - Words With No Action

Article I of the United States Constitution, surprisingly similar to the British constitution, provides the House of Representatives the sole power of impeachment and the Senate the sole power to try impeachments.
Article I, Section 2, Clause 5:
The House of Representatives shall chuse [sic] their speaker and other Officers; and shall have the sole Power of Impeachment.
Article I, Section 3, Clause 7:
Judgment in Cases of Impeachment shall not extend further than to removal from Office, and disqualification to hold and enjoy any Office of honor, Trust or Profit under the United States: but the Party convicted shall nevertheless be liable and subject to Indictment, Trial, Judgment and Punishment, according to Law.

VA Reformation Bill: Example of Spending More to Solve Problems

As is usual with legislators of the federal government, spending more is the answer to any solution. On July 28th, a conference committee of House and Senate leaders agreed on a bill designed to overhaul the troubled Department of Veterans Affairs, which will cost $17 billion that will crack down on VA employee wrongdoing and direct funding toward solving the problems ensued by the recent scandal of waiting time and falsifying records. It is called a “reform bill” and will enact the following:
$10 billion will be placed in a created Veterans Choice Fund in the US Treasury to fund private treatment when vets cannot get a VA appointment within two weeks or live more than 40 miles from a VA facility. It will also fund a pilot program to provide access to outside care in five of the 23 VA service networks that will be extended for two more years.

Importance of Muzzle Crowns

The crown of a barrel, be it rifle or pistol, is an important aspect of accuracy and marksmanship that firearm owners may overlook or take for granted. In military standards, like at the President's 100 marksmanship gunsmith shop at Fort Benning, Georgia, for target standard crown is the 11-degree crown. A properly cut crown will ensure that the circumference of the base of a bullet exits the muzzle at exactly the same time.Diagram at left shows barrel and crown relationship.

Call Your Congress Member: Say NO to Funding Illegal Immigrant Programs

We the People of the United States of America are in the middle of a crisis that has culminated into sense of urgency and certainly a national security issue. Our southern border was supposed to be secured five years ago. Our lawmakers, the US Congress MUST reject President Obama's spending request for amnesty and his secretive program (not even congressional members allowed to investigate illegal immigrant holding area) as well as return ALL illegal immigrants back from whence they came. Congress also requires to reverse the Obama executive order for unilateral amnesty before the August recess.

Funding Legislation Practices Must Change

Allen West sent a memo, concerning the way both political parties orchestrate funding legislation, reprinted here:

Senate Democrats are playing a disgusting game with the security of Israel for political purposes.

The U.S .Defense Department has asked for emergency funding of $225 million in support of Israel’s Iron Dome protective weapon system. But  the Democrat-controlled Senate is trying to tie this with funding  President Obama’s request in the current illegal immigration border crisis.

This is the devious way funding is manipulated on Capitol Hill — and sadly, it happens on both sides of the aisle.

Steadfast and Loyal

Funding requires separate bill submitted for voting. Presidents should send back bills that do not and Congress needs to pass legislation requiring it to be so. Reduction of loophole politics is essential. Also, read what Mr. West has stated about multiculturalism in Europe where immigrant/citizens are more loyal to the enemies of the free world than the UK's army reserve. It is truly a danger to western civilization.

Thought for the day: US foreign policy, especially with Israel has been to concede to Palestine/Hamas whenever possible and now Kerry wants Israel to hold a truce. So the question is, does federal government practice what it preaches? What if Mexico lobbed rockets into Texas? Would we do what is expected of Israel?

Senator Johnson Lawsuit Against Obama Administration Denied

There are congressional members in the US Congress presently that believe that those that operate our government must adhere to their oaths of office to obey and protect constitutional law, not just by words but actions. True, there are not enough of such statesmen and stateswomen, but out of that embarrassingly small list there is Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. You may be aware that it was he who submitted a lawsuit against the Obama administration for practices against executive overreach; which just was shot down by a district judge. Senator Johnson offers citizens to stand against this president and his unconstitutional and incompetent actions via a petition.

July 20, 2014: 45th Anniversary of Lunar Landing

Forty-five years ago, three astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins went into space to be the first to walk on the moon. They left planet Earth on July 16, 1969 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida aboard the Apollo 11 spacecraft and arrived on the moon four days later on July 20, 1969.

Wausau Wisconsin Man Fired For Having Firearm in His Vehicle

The HR manager misrepresented (lied) about the firing suggesting that the employee had the firearm outside the vehicle. Even on the day of his firing, the man was praised by his supervisors for his performance.

Grilled Potato Salad

Since I am on a roll with a BBQ dinner, here is a great side dish discovery that will go along with that Bourbon Barbeque ChickenGrilled Potato Salad that serves 8 created by Rebeccah Marsters at Cook's Country.

Bourbon BBQ Sauce

This BBQ sauce recipe compliments grilling meats using Kentucky bourbon. It makes 4 cups of sauce that can be stored in the canning process.
½ onion, minced or 1 tablespoon powdered onion
4 cloves garlic, minced or 1 tablespoon dry garlic powder/flakes
¾ cup bourbon whiskey
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
½ teaspoon sea salt
¼ teaspoon dry mustard
2 cups ketchup
¼ cup tomato paste
1/3 cup cider vinegar
2 tablespoons liquid smoke flavoring
2 tablespoons lemon juice
¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
½ cup packed brown sugar
1/3 teaspoon hot pepper sauce, or to taste

Smoky Grilled Bourbon Chicken

Everyone knows how wine is something to keep in the kitchen for adding flavors to sauces and such; but few think about using bourbon whiskey. Here is a recipe that can use the whiskey in its marination process for either a whole chicken (or Cornish hens) or whole chicken breasts/halves.

Bruce Walker Has It Right - We Need A New Contract With America

Twenty years ago, 300 House Republican candidates stunned Democrats with its Contract With America. This brief, clear document committed those who signed on to do several specific things if voters gave Republicans control of the House of Representatives, a body that Democrats had controlled for the prior four decades. Eight of the promises in the Contract With America were internal changes in the operation of the House of Representatives, and the House fulfilled them. The other part of this document promised to bring to floor votes within 100 days ten substantive bills that the Democrat leadership of the House had kept bottled up, protecting their members from having to vote on these measures. No document in modern American political history was kept as completely as the Contract With America. Conservatives today who whine that Gingrich was not able to enact these ten bills into law ignore the explicit purpose of the Contract With America, which was to end the tyranny of House Democrat leaders who protected their members by keeping these measures from floor votes. Gingrich and House Republicans over-performed on their promises: all of the eight reforms that House Democrats had bottled up for decades passed with overwhelmingly bipartisan support, and all of the ten substantive bills passed (most with significant Democrat support).

Greatness of the Founders: An Objective Examination, Part 5

James Madison was the major architect of the Constitution and constructed the Bill of Rights, amendments to the Constitution, coauthor of The Federalist and who advocated religious liberty. He was the co-founder of the Democratic-Republican political party in the 1790s and the most important member of the first House of Representatives in 1789. He was Secretary of State to Jefferson's administration; and the fourth President of the United States. Yet compared to other Founders, especially Thomas Jefferson who was his close friend, he has not received as much accolade from historians.

Immigration and Border Security is Reaching a Boiling Point

For decades our presidents has not enforced immigration laws or actively sought to secure our southern border once and for all. President Bush signed the bill to authorize the security required, but the border security fence authorized has NOT been built. Why?
Of all the presidents in those several decades, Mr. Obama is the worst and his policies are strictly political and has made matters more critical.

Greatness of the Founders: An Objective Examination, Part 4

When people wrote about Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, they write him as the founder of American capitalism. Yet, in 1900 when that New York University established a Hall of Fame, Alexander Hamilton was honored by being the first person selected. Theodore Roosevelt was a fan of Hamilton and the first editor of the New Republic, Herbert Croly, called him – a sound thinker, the constructive statesman who sponsored a vigorous, positive, constructive national policy ...that implied a faith in the powers of an efficient government to advance the national interest. [The Promise of American Life, Herbert Croly, NY, 2002; p. 29 & p. 38]

Greatness of the Founders: An Objective Examination, Part 3

While Benjamin Franklin became a symbol of the ability to succeed in the United States rising from poverty to wealth, Thomas Jefferson became the symbol of the advocacy against tyranny, the principles of the Constitution, and the battle against oppression. He has been the most quoted of the Founders and scrutinized for his seeming hypocrisy that all are created equal and at the same time retaining slaves. The first person to write Jefferson's biography was James Parton, who wrote:
If Jefferson was wrong, America is wrong. If America is right, Jefferson was right. [The Jeffersonian Image in the American Mind, Merrill Peterson, Oxford University Press, 1960; p. 234]

Door Peninsula Fishing Report - July 2014

Gary Nault of Sturgeon Bay won the recent Minnesota Fishing Tournament and provides a daily fishing report at WBDK radio or Lance Lavine WDOR radio or Door County Daily News. Gary Nault was praised by Door Country Daily News CEO, Roger Utnehmer for his contribution to the promotion of fishing off the Door Peninsula.
Fishing has been good for salmon and rainbow trout in depths from 90 feet to 375 feet. Most of the rainbows have been coming up to 30 foot depths and salmon has been at 70 to 80 feet. Flasher fly combination lures have worked the best for the King Salmon and flashy lures for the rainbow trout.
Bass has been running well from Egg Harbor to the northern tip of the peninsula, as well as Washington Island. Best catches have been at 8 to 15 feet of water with tubes, scrubs and spinner baits. Top water bites have been productive. The traditional Sturgeon Bay Flats area and Sand Bay is site to catch bass as well as mid-depth humps at Larson's Reef. Try drop shot at the reefs.
Perch catches have improved anywhere there is a decent weed bed and the marinas. Little Sturgeon Bay has improved since the weed beds are beginning to form. Live crawlers are being successfully used for perch.
Local Howie's Tackle in Sturgeon Bay has a great line of tackle and their custom lures have been successful in catching salmon and lake trout.

Greatness of the Founders: An Objective Examination, Part 2

Benjamin Franklin was a man who wore many hats and contributed to the science of electricity and invention. For historians, he is a complex character who rose from obscure poverty to be among the great thinkers of the founding of a new nation. An artisan, he was a self-made man with little formal education and rose from poverty to wealth. Ordinary citizens identified with him because he was more in tune with common society than the other founding gentlemen, like Washington and Jefferson.

Bill to Repatriate Korean War Rifles Loaned Still in Committee

George Washington became thoroughly disgusted and impatient with Congress when they wanted to refer his treaty with Creek natives to committee, after deliberating each paragraph in discussion. He would have a stroke if he was living today.
H.R. 2247: Collectible Firearms Protection Act is a bill sponsored by the dynamic, active constitutionalist representative in the House for Wyoming - Cynthia Lummis. It has been in committee since June 4th, 2013 and now over a year later has not been processed by the committee.

Greatness of Founders: An Objective Examination, Part 1

The United States was founded on a set of beliefs and not, as were other nations, on a common ethnicity, language, or religion. … By the time Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on the same day, July 4, 1826, exactly fifty years following the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, an aura of divinity had come to surround the founding generation.

Gubernatorial Wisconsin Election: Mary Burke Shows True Colors

Demonstrating the pure hypocrisy and corruptness of Democrat candidates, Mary Burke stated yesterday that she would outlaw campaign donations from out-of-state residents. She stated this at a fund raiser in Sister Bay in Door County.
Director of the Wisconsin Republican Party, Joe Fadness, announced that Mary Burke had collected 30% of her donations from contributors outside Wisconsin, which amounts to more than $1 million. Fadness was reported to say in a news release:
Burke should practice what she preaches and immediately return the donations she has received from outside Wisconsin.

Cleaning Kits: Tips for New Firearm Owners

In 2012 firearm ownership skyrocketed mainly because of the political movement to ban so many models and types of firearms. In addition, many states finally complied with the Second Amendment and offered conceal-carry permits available to law-abiding citizens. This also boosted firearm training programs that emphasized upon safety and proper carry and draw procedures.
With all those new to firearms the myriad of gun cleaning products available on the market and some spent a fortune when they did not need to.

Shoulder Holster Tips

Galco Kodiak Hunter model
When I was a limo driver I carried large quantities of cash, thus also carried a 9mm with a Bianchi leather skeleton holster. It was so comfortable I would forget it was there, balanced because on the right side there was a magazine holster. So with that experience, I pass on to readers some tips if you choose to use that style of conceal carry holster.
The standard carry position for this type of holster is the vertical position, which is the choice if you carry large frame automatics or “Dirty-Harry” style long-barrel revolvers. There are models also available with long-barrel scoped revolvers for hunters or custom holster for those who have laser-point systems.

Growing Heroin Trafficking in Wisconsin Due to Immigrant Invasion and Drug Cartel

According to the National Drug Assessment Report and the Recent Wisconsin Report released by the FBI, heroin trafficking has increased in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It is because of the recruitment of branches of the Mexican drug cartel increasing because of poor border security and the executive branch of the federal government, specifically the President, ignores immigration laws and has advocated retaining illegal aliens in the United States for various reasoning, but purely political.
As reported back in April, more than 3,000 US cities have been infiltrated by soldiers of the Mexican Drug Cartel who has increased its heroin production to meet the demand.

Titanium Bolt Carrier: Less Muzzle Rise, Recoil and Better Grouping

BoomFab Titane Carrier [BoomFab photo]
BoomFab has produced a low-mass, reduced-gas bolt carrier for the AR-15 rifles called the Titane Carrier. The Missouri manufacturer produces the carrier on a CNC system and claims to be the lightest bolt carrier on the market. Titanium is known for its strength and lightness, used in eyeglass frames to reduce weight. The reduced amount of gas is an added feature in the lightweight model, which reduces muzzle rise and recoil for faster and more accurate shots on the range and in competition. Aluminum bolt carriers were made, but proved unable to withstand any long term use.

Federal Government: Its Scope and Cost is Unacceptable

The following information comes from a 2009 census breaking down the departments and agencies of the United States federal executive branch. Demand for constitutional and economical downsizing has been called for in recent decades with no results. For example, why is there a department overseeing housing that includes housing welfare funding? That department can be greatly reduced while keeping government out of of private sector concerns.

Happy Independence Day!

Time for barbequing and music [WBDK, 96.7 FM] and when the sun sets traditional fireworks – spending quality time with our family and friends. Yet, we must not forget what this day represents, especially today where our nation is on a threshold of a point where there may be no return. Yet amidst these gloomy events and circumstances there is hope, not based on socialism, but a constitutional republic created 238 years ago by men who were brave enough to stand upon principles and values that all humans should have.
